CFW 3.95 GEN - Could this be our new CFW if DA leaves the PSP for further PS3 development?

It seems in the absence of DA and Team M33 the folks over at PSPGen have been cooking up a new CFW.

There is no release date as of yet, but here is a quote on it's abilities and a video to show it functioning. (the video is in French, but is clear what is running)

In the article "Why a custom firmware 3.93 rather than 3.95 ?", We explained that 3.95 was regarded as no great novelty and interest. However, our fetish programmer had wanted to go ahead and after finding the keys to decrypt the firmware and updated RSPsarDumper, it has finalized a functional Custom Firmware 3.95.
As for 3.93 CF, it is based on a reverse of the work of the Team M33 (involving a lot of changes, NIDS, patches, etc) but 3.95 parts is coded by our programmer alone.

It took a while to get there but it works very well even if some small bugs continue to be resistant. The test phase is therefore begun, and we try to make the best correct everything that is possible.

What does or does not, the new Custom Firmware?

Launch ISO / homebrew 3.xx
Adding a name to differentiate firmware for PSP to 3.95 standard ones FC (general request in the forums).
POPS 3.95
IRShell functional functional execpt ISO Launch
PSP 5.0 Filer functional
Plug-in Capture.prx tested ok
Plug-in cwcheat.prx tested ok
Plug-in Recovery LE (Ketchup) and tested ok (except for displaying the version number blocked on 3.90M33 - Update plug-in planned)
The USB Host is always a bugguy but works perfectly with a small tip.
The recovery is still accessible directly via the XMB with the L key
CXMB does not currently works but we updating the plug-in is underway (just a problem of addresses to settle)
Popsloader not working. Only Dark_Alex can update its plug-in. Is not planned at this time.
Taking screenshots should be added. Still under discussion.

Speculation Time: What will firmware 4.00 bring?

We never should have assumed Skype was coming to firmware 4.0. After all, Skype is just Skype. Clearly Sony has bigger plans for the next level of PSP firmware. Or do they? Tonight we’ll analyze what Sony has on their plate, what we’d like to add to the menu, and what the finished product should look like. There’s plenty of rumors, speculation, and fabrications going around; it’s our job to sort them out, and we’re going to do just that.

To start off, there’s two big rumors going around. The first one involves a lot of goodies, but may not be entirely realistic. While the well-balanced list does look appealing, it’s hard to believe Sony would dump all of these features between 3.90 and 4.00. In fact, this long list (if true) would likely skip 4.00 altogether, and bring a 5.00 update.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Behold, the long list of rumored 4.00 content:

Game

PLAYSTATION 3 Network titles can be played under PSP [Remote Play] under Game. The PSP is then used as a monitor for any game playable in Playstation 3 game console.

Network
Real, Quicktime, and WMV audio and video codecs are now supported.
[Shockwave Player] has been added as a feature.

PSP web browser has been updated to allow compatibility with current websites.
[Adobe Flash Player 9] has been added as a feature, using the Memory Stick Pro Duo as flash memory.

[Remote Play] has been improved by the PS3 outputting 1080p to the PSP with larger icons text and better video quality. Remote Play now transmits at 11 mbps per sec.
802.11g support has been added as a feature.

PSOne games can now be downloaded without a PS3

Level 6 has been added to rate in Sony LocationFree Player to improve picture quality in H.264
[Auto Connect] has been added as a featureMusic

More visuals has been added as a feature.Video

Real, QuickTime, and WMV audio and video codecs are now supported.
RSS [Video Streaming] has been added as a feature.

[Color Configuration] has been added as a feature.

Recording has been added as a feature under Audio and Video RSS Streaming.Other
Copy, Command, Paste, Auto Complete, and Advanced Cookie Management has been added as a feature.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Let’s pick at it a bit, shall we? The first feature mentioned is PS3 gaming on the PSP. For one thing, this isn’t new; Lair does exactly this. I can’t see Sony bringing a wide range of titles with Remote Play. The video codecs are what they are, with my only input being DivX on the PS3, but not yet on the PSP. Sony needs to get on that. Next we’ve got a mentioned Shockwave Player, and Adobe Flash 9 support. We’ve been awaiting flash support for quite some time, so it’s no surprise that it shows up here. With that said, I don’t believe the current PSP can handle full, up-to-date flash support. I would expect some form Flash mobile/lite.The next mentioned feature is an 802.11g upgrade. Wouldn’t that be nice. I don’t know the requirements for this upgrade, or if the PSP’s Wi-Fi card is capable. I do know Remote Play being upgraded to 1080p (TV-out) is unrealistic, as is copy/paste and cookies management in the browser. Something tells me Sony is going in an entirely different direction, and uninterested in improving YouTube viewing and browser settings.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I’ll leave the rest of the noted features for discussion in the comments. Let’s move on to the less-filling, but perhaps more realistic list of rumored 4.00 updates:
[Go! Messenger]* has been added as a feature under [Network]
[Date & Time] menu has been added
[Organizer] has been added as a feature under [Date & Time]
Danish and Norsk languages have been added
The ability to customize the volume bar and battery meter under [Theme Settings] have been added
The ability to create and edit playlists under [Photo] and [Music] have been added

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hmm. These are more like the official update we’re accustom to, unfortunately. While they do provide new functionality, they’re far from thrilling. Go!Messenger is already available for those in Europe, an organizer would be neat (not necessarily ideal), but not very entertaining. Creating and editing playlists is also a nice touch, but once add, doesn’t again, doesn’t a whole lot to the PSP experience. Here’s what Sony should do, and if I’m lucky as all hell, they will do. Before updating to firmware 4.00, bring any little features you’re planning. An organizer? Great, stick it in a 3.92 update, we promise not to be mad. What we should see on firmware 4.00:
Support for Home, even if it’s minimal
Flash 7+ support, a mobile version, or a standalone YouTube-like launcher
A mobile version of the Playstation Store
DivX support, additional AV supportTo be fair, I could never expect Sony to cram all this into a single firmware update. Also, we have to keep in the mind the PSP is certainly limited by it’s internal memory. If Sony were to include even one of these options, I would consider it a worthwhile update. The idea of a PSP Store has been tossed around, but I’m pretty sure it’s still in development. Home may not be coming until May (or later) so perhaps we’ll skip on that too. It’s all up to Sony, and we know they’ve got their hands full. Look forward to a firmware update in the next few weeks, just don’t expect the long lists of features that have been passing around the internet.

HomeBrew - IRShell

Why iR Shell? What's so great about it? I'll tell you...

Here's why you should use iR Shell and what's so great about it:

iR Shell can:

Do basic shell functions:
--Launch homebrew
--Launch UMD
--Enter usb mode
--Exit back to shell from homebrew/umd
--Be a file browser
--Give date/time/battery info display

Be an IR remote for over 2000 devices (and I think it's over 6000 devices if you download more than just the remote on the website)

Take screenshots of homebrew, UMD, XMB, pretty much everything

View images (.bmp, .jpg, .png)
Be an MP3 player that can run in the background of your UMDs and homebrew, has basic functions like pause/play, stop, next, previous, volume +/-, can make playlists

Change CPU speed (even for launched games/homebrews)
Switch between launched homebrew or UMD and iR Shell (to change your MP3 playlist or view a photo, or check battery status, or send a file to another PSP or something like that--all of that and more can be done in the background while another app is running)

Transfer files to another PSP via Ad Hoc connection

Be Skinnable

Run file manipulation functions (copy, paste, delete, rename) even between the memory stick and usbhost or nethost.

Open a Configurator which lets you customize things like default CPU speed, date/time display, skin and put a password on file manipulating or entering the configurator

Lock the PSP so that a password is needed to continue

Use PSP headphone remote control for MP3 player functions

Have support for user plugins (EBOOTS and PRX to run a specific filetype).

Have support for UMD browsing

Have support for USB host file system browsing (remotely browse and run files on your PC via USB including music, images, homebrew, isos, psx games, and supported files from plugins)

Have support for Infrastructure WiFi host (net host) file system browsing (remotely browse and run files on your PC via Infrastructure WiFi including music, images, homebrew, isos, psx games, and supported files from plugins)
Redirect usbhost or nethost to the memory stick (allows proper homebrew streaming from the PC as well as MP4 streaming)

Launch the XMB from iR Shell and exit back to it (can do most XMB functions from here except play UMDs and launch homebrew, this is how you stream MP4 movies from your PC when connected and redirected)

Do alarm clock functions

Give a low battery warning

Have built in ISO, CSO and UMD Video ISO loader for launching legally backed up UMDs (can also be streamed from nethost or usbhost)

Launch PSX games (and they can also be streamed from nethost or usbhost)

Run the existing plugins (it can open these files): PMP, PMP AVC, AT3, PMF, ZIP, RAR, TXT, PDF, 7Z, OGG, HTM, HTML, LUA, CBR, CBZ and some more. (And don't forget it also has built in viewers/players for MP3, BMP, JPG, and PNG as mentioned before.)

Use an Ad Hoc internet connection for homebrew or for nethost (it's the only homebrew that can do that)

Quick exit from any homebrew, UMD, XMB, etc by pressing the Home and Square buttons simultaneously.

Mute parts (channels) or all of the game audio

Organize homebrew into subfolders

Download PSP Emulator - How To Get Emulators For Your PSP and Play Classic Games

Want to download PSP emulator software? Many people aren’t aware of it, but using your Sony PSP with emulator software is just about some of the best fun you can have with it. Imagine how cool it is to download and play yesterday’s classics like Super Mario and Sonic?

Using emulator software with your PSP isn’t exactly as simple as it first sounds however. First of all you will need to download some Emulation software for your PSP. This software basically lets you download and use the games from other systems on your PSP. As with lots of things on PSP, there are thousands of places to get this software from online, but many of them can be quite shady and may damage your PSP or your computer. Read on below to learn how to find the reputable places to download PSP emulator software.

Once you’ve managed to download PSP emulator software, you will then need to find some games to use it with. The game files to use with emulation software are often called Roms, and before you download any it is worth finding out the legal standpoint-in many places it is illegal to download roms for emulators, unless the original manufacturer has made the download property of the public domain, which some do. On the other hand, the law in many places will allow you to have a backup copy of a game you already own-so if you already have the games on your old Genesis or whatever, you’re set!

The next step in downloading PSP emulator software is to check the firmware of your PSP. Certain firmwares will not allow the use of such software, so generally speaking you are better with one of the early ones. Don’t worry though; there are plenty of ways to downgrade your firmware to an earlier version if that’s what you need to do.

As we said, finding some reliable sources to download PSP emulators from and the games etc can be tricky-in general such sites can be put into three groups-

1-Totally free sites, but with poor selections, software that doesn’t work and downloads that are super slow and often riddled with spyware and malware, that’s if they work at all.

2-Membership sites that will claim to be free, but then try and charge you by the download. This is not cool, and I don’t know about you but I don’t like the idea of paying good money for 10 or 15 year old games that I already own.

3-Cool membership sites that charge a one off fee and then give unlimited downloads. I would recommend sites like this to download PSP emulator software from, as they are usually very professionally run, and offer a wide range of downloads at a very high speed. As an added bonus you can usually find brand new PSP games to download, as well as the emulation stuff, all in with the same initial price.

So You Want to Download Game, PSP Format? 3 Essential Tips

So you want to play the download game? PSP downloads are all over the web, and why shouldn’t they be? The PSP is an amazing piece of technology, the only drawbacks to it are the prices of games and movies, which is where the free psp game download sites come in. The only problem is that lots of these sites are no more than scammers trying to infect your computer or even worse. I’ve compiled a few tips for you here so you may be able to download games for PSP safely.

Play the download game, PSP style-Game Download Tip 1
Get yourself a trusted site- Surf the PSP sites for any longer than about 30 seconds and you will soon notice all the ads offering free PSP game downloads, and also mp3s for PSP and movies etc. Once they wear you down enough for you to give and click one of these pop ups or banners, almost everytime you’ll be lead to some lame page offering a handful of old PSP games to download free. The best part is that when you try and download any, you’ll find the downloads real slow, the servers may boot you because they are overworked, and best yet you might even be downloading a virus too! I don’t need to tell you that you need to avoid sites like this- believe me, it’s just not worth the hassle.

Play the download game, PSP style-Game Download Tip 2
Don’t be drawn in- Things that seem too good to be true usually are, so don’t let the claims of some of these sites catch you out. As well as the illegal sites mentioned above, you will also find more than a few “scam” sites. They look like a dream come true at first-latest games, new movies, cool wallpapers etc, but it all stops as soon as you actually try to download something. They’ll ask for your credit card details faster than you can blink! What’s worse, it’s not even a one off fee, they will be wanting you to pay monthly for as long as you want to use their service. Hard to see how they can claim “free” PSP game downloads huh? I tend to avoid these guys too. I don’t like to be charged when they tell me something is free, and I certainly don’t like paying monthly.

Play the download game, PSP style-Game Download Tip 3
Pay for quality- Since I’ve had my PSP I have found a few download sites that are worth their weight in gold. The drawback is that for the best sites like these you need to pay, but it’s not a big scam like those other guys. It’s usually just one fee, ever, $30 or $40, and then you get to download as much as you want as often as you want. Because you pay them upfront, they can make sure they have all the latest free PSP game downloads, and they are all high speed etc. Basically for the price of one new game you get to own every new game ever released. Not too shabby huh?

That’s all there is to playing the download game, PSP style. Try and avoid the scam sites, and find one good site to stick to. If you find the right site you can download to your hearts content and never have to pay another fee.
